Cheap Lighting

No Cost Lighting Set Up

When I first started taking photos I would shoot inside with halogen work lights. If found that this lighting was not powerful enough and left too many harsh shadows.

The most powerful light is the sun and I decided to use that to my advantage. It didn’t cost any money and came out every day!

Simply position the sun so that it is the key light and use a reflector as the fill light. A reflector can be anything from a mirror to the reflector used for cars. The best day to take this type of photo is during a cloudy day as the light will be diffused and have less harsh shadows.

Diffusing the Sun

On sunny days without clouds the suns light can be very harsh and create many very sharp shadows. To solve this problem the lighting should be diffused. You can purchase a cloth or professional diffuser and place it overhead to cover the sun. The sun will pass through the diffuser and become a softer light.

When I first started taking photos I had no background and simply took pictures of things and people standing outside in front of a wall. After I’d shoot the picture I’d edit it in Photoshop and remove the background and replace it with a solid bright color.
