Learning to take good photos can be hard. When starting out, it seems impossible to take photos like those seen in magazines and museums. One must remember, however, that those famous pictures weren't the photographers first photo. Most likely that picture was taken after years and years of experience and practice in photography.
It can be discouraging when first beginning, but following some main composition rules can speed up the learning curve. "Rules", however, are not meant to be followed 100% and are rather guidelines to taking photos. After playing around with some rules and becoming well acquanted with them, then it is time to break the rules.
